Russia took over the United Nations Security Council on Saturday in what Ukraine’s foreign minister described as “the world’s worst April Fool’s joke”.
As Moscow’s brutal war in Ukraine rages on, Russia took the helm of the council earlier in the new month – which has a month-long presidency that rotates among its 15 member countries.
Ukraine’s top foreign diplomat was outraged by the fact that the country, ruled by Vladimir Putin, an indicted war criminal, will chair the council, whose main task is to maintain international peace.
“The country, which is systematically violating all fundamental rules of international security, heads a body whose sole task is to uphold and protect international security,” said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, calling the change in leadership “the worst April Fool’s joke in the world.” World”.
Ukraine’s presidential adviser Mykhaylo Podolyak also condemned Russia’s assumption of the presidency, calling it “another violation of international law”.
