Lasso, a 67-year-old businessman who became president in May 2021, is facing a possible impeachment trial for embezzlement being sought by opposition lawmakers. The Conservative President has denied the allegations, saying they are an attempt by supporters of former President Rafael Correa (2007-2017) to seize power and weaken democracy.
