After the devastating scourge of a tornado-filled storm system that devastated everything in its path this Friday, debris removal and cleanup efforts are beginning in countless locations throughout the southern and Midwestern United States.
At least 26 people have died Victims of these tornadoes in eight states in the country: Arkansas, Indiana, Illinois, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Ohio.
The dead include at least nine in a Tennessee county, four in the small town of Wynne, Arkansas, three in Sullivan, Indiana and four in Illinois. That is feared the death toll is increasing with the passing of the hours.
Alabama state authorities said an elderly person in Huntsville died when a tornado hit his home, they also reported five deaths in the communities of Cross and Pulaski.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a tornado and severe storm warning in the northeast of the country, particularly in Ohio.
Bad weather left more than 997,000 customers in 14 Midwestern states without power.
Disaster hit the city of Belvidere, Illinois, on Friday night and early Saturday when a massive tornado brought down the roof and part of the facade of the Apollo Theater in the middle of a heavy metal band concert.
Belvidere Fire Chief Shawn Schadle confirmed that one person was killed and 28 injured, five with serious injuries, in the disaster. Authorities in neighboring Indiana confirmed the deaths of three people after a storm swept through Sullivan County.
State of emergency in Arkansas
“For me right now, it’s just what I can do and then sort things out and try to see who else I can help,” he said in Wynne, Arkansas. Heidi Jensen, business owner. “And then we’ll see what we can do at school to fix it.”
More of Half a million homes and businesses lost power on Saturday 200,000 of them in Ohio alone. In Arkanas, its governor, Sarah Huckabee Sandersdeclared a state of emergency on Friday, which activated support for the National Guard in that state.
All of this comes just a week after another series of tornadoes, this time in Mississippi, killed 26 more people.
It is expected that they will take place in the next week new tornadoes.
