Scotland, Husband of Ex Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon Released After Arrest: “But Investigations Continue”

Peter Murrell, husband of former Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon, was released late afternoon after being arrested by Edinburgh police this morning, Wednesday April 5. Investigators said investigations into alleged financial irregularities in management at pro-independence party SNP, of which he was CEO until last month, continue, although charges have not yet been formalized. Last February, Sturgeon announced his decision to step down from his role as Prime Minister and leader of the SNP (Scottish National Party). The former prime minister, who was replaced by Humza Yousaf, said her resignation was primarily due to a state of fatigue and being overwhelmed. Sturgeon has pledged maximum cooperation “upon request” from authorities and said he was unaware of the investigation before resigning.

The investigation

In recent weeks, the SNP has also been the subject of some investigations by Scottish Police for managing a £600,000 fundraiser. Officially, this money was raised to hold a second referendum on Scottish independence. However, according to investigators, it would have helped the party fill some budget gaps and pay for the organizing machine’s day-to-day activities. Also on the list of suspects is Murrell, who until a few weeks ago was the CEO of SNP.
