KCNA released an oped by Choe Ju Hyon, whom it described as an international security analyst, criticizing the drills as “a trigger to bring the situation on the Korean Peninsula to a blast point.”
“The ruthless military confrontation hysteria of the US and its supporters against the DPRK is leading the situation on the Korean Peninsula to irreversible catastrophe… North, DPRK.
“Now the international community unanimously hopes that the dark clouds of nuclear war hanging over the Korean Peninsula will be cleared as soon as possible,” he added.
US and South Korean forces have conducted a series of annual exercises since March, including air and sea exercises involving a US aircraft carrier and B1B and B52 bombers, as well as their first largescale amphibious landing exercises.
North Korea reacted angrily to the drills, calling them a dress rehearsal for the invasion.
North Korea has ramped up its military activities in recent weeks, unveiling new, smaller nuclear warheads, promising to produce more nuclear material for weapons and testing a socalled nuclearcapable underwater attack drone.
Last month, the North Korean government tested an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of hitting anywhere in the United States, calling it a response to the drills.
