Argentina’s president announced rejoining the Union of South American Nations after the country left Mauricio Macri’s administration in 2019.

Argentina made its re-entry into the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) official this Wednesday (04/05/2023) and Brazil will do so the following day, which will give new impetus to this group, which was formed under the influence of left-wing governments. announced the Argentine President Alberto Fernandez in Chile.

Founded in 2008 with 12 members, UNASUR was paralyzed because it had not been able to elect a new Secretary General to succeed Colombian Ernesto Samper since 2017. The conservative turn that the region later took and differing views on the Venezuelan crisis further weakened the bloc, from which Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay and Ecuador eventually left. Only Bolivia, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela remain indoors.

“Today we have already formalized our joining UNASUR. Brazil, if I’m not mistaken, will do the same tomorrow and I asked the President (of Chile Gabriel) Boric that we have to work together to recreate UNASUR. but in these times not the UNASUR of other times,” Fernández told reporters at the Chilean presidential palace.

Fernández paid a brief official visit to Santiago this Wednesday to meet with his Chilean counterpart, Gabriel Boric. “We must guarantee an UNASUR that serves the economic development of our peoples, where we see how we integrate companies from Chile, Argentina, Brazil and other countries,” added the Argentine President.

Argentina chose to leave the group during the government of conservative Mauricio Macri in 2019. She was succeeded by Brazil, her founding member and largest member, following a decision by far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro.
