Japan’s stomach-twisting “sushi terrorism” is rampant.

Police arrested two men in Osaka this week for contaminating a shared bowl of pickled ginger at a fast-food restaurant as part of a viral prank.

Ryu Shimazu, 35, and Toshihide Oka, 34, filmed themselves dipping their chopsticks in the communal bowl and munching at Yoshinoya, a popular beef bowl chain in the port city.

A restaurant spokesman said customers are only allowed to use serving utensils to pick out the ginger — not with chopsticks already in their mouths.

“The video made our regular customers feel uncomfortable and uncomfortable,” Yoshinoya said in a statement, adding that the chain had to close the restaurant to clean its bins.

“We deeply regret that this has become major news, calling into question the safety and security of the entire hospitality industry. We sincerely hope that this doesn’t happen again in the future.”

According to police, Oka goaded Shimazu into doing something funny at the restaurant – which prompted Shimazu to feast on the ginger while his friend filmed it.

They told police they just wanted to “make everyone laugh” and thought it was “funny”.

The prank caused a lot of laughs across the internet, but the aftermath is no laughing matter.

The couple are now facing charges of obstructing business and damaging property, which could result in fines of up to $6,080 and up to three years in prison.

The incident is just the latest of the “sushi terror” pranks to plague Japan’s fast-food industry.en_soku/Twitter Last month, three people were arrested for allegedly using their hands to grab sushi from a conveyor belt. disgusttakigare3/Twitter A customer licks a shared bowl at a sushi assembly line restaurant. The incident is just the latest in a “sushi terrorism” prank to plague Japan’s fast-food industry, particularly the conveyor-belt sushi system.

Last month, police arrested three people for allegedly licking the lid of a communal soy sauce container and using their hands to pick up sushi from a conveyor belt at Kurta sushi restaurant in central Japan.

Similar incidents circulating on social media in recent years have raised concerns that the country’s conveyor belt sushi system and municipal bowl restaurants may be outdated and in need of a major overhaul.
