‘Giant’
Giant. USA, 1956 (190 minutes). Directed by George Stevens. Cast: Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, James Dean.
As a symbol of a cinema that has now disappeared, Gigante represents the art that lived in the Hollywood studios like few films. Back then, the big blockbusters knew how to hide edges and turbulence, like in this gigantic melodrama in which the author of the legendary Deep Roots portrays two generations of families: a group of characters who, with fatalism in the background, make shake the screen, drowned in ambition , heartbreak and frustration.

“The Big Lebowski”
The big Lebowski. USA, 1997 (110 minutes). Directed by Joel Coen. Cast: Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, John Turturro.
After the monumental Fargo, the Coens said goodbye with another masterpiece from the nineties. The Big Lebowski proposes a fusion of genres, combining drama, comedy, film noir and gangster parody in a wild satire of American society. All this thanks to El Nota, a guy who is as lazy as he is funny and lives between marijuana fumes and bowling games. The adventures begin when some thugs mistake him for a rich millionaire.

‘City of God’
city of god. Brazil, 2002 (130 minutes). Director: Fernando Meirelles. Cast: Alexandre Rodrigues, Matheus Nachtergaele, Leandro Firmino.
In 2002, Fernando Meirelles showed himself to be an overwhelmingly brave director with this authentic film whiplash, enveloping the viewer in a mass of violent and hallucinating images, entangled in a mixture of storylines and time jumps. City of God delves into the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro and drenches the screen with the life of its streets, cruel and desperate, in which youths, recruited by drug dealers, survive and grow up knowing that their existence is worth a bullet.

“The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn”
United States, 2011 (107 minutes). Directed by Steven Spielberg. Cast: Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Daniel Craig, Nick Frost.
Spielberg behind the camera and Peter Jackson as producer take on the challenge of bringing a beloved 20th century icon like Tintin to the screen. It’s true that the film’s technical processing is impeccable, and the use of motion capture technology that animates the actors’ faces and movements is amazing. But it’s also true that, as in much of Spielberg’s cinema, aesthetic perfection drowns out both the emotion and the true essence of the staging.

“The Girl of the Pearl”
The girl with the pearl earring. United Kingdom, 2003 (100 minutes). Director: Peter Weber. Cast: Colin Firth, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Wilkinson.
In the Netherlands of 1665, a teenager works as a maid in the home of the painter Johannes Vermeer; A tense relationship soon develops between the two, which is roiled by political and economic intrigues and characterized by a lust for pictures. Newcomer Peter Webber surprises with a film that is basically modest but grows sequence by sequence: this little gem, supported by a Scarlett Johansson that literally hypnotizes the viewer, dives into the stylistic keys of Vermeer’s painting and colorfully traces a child prodigy as moving character portrait.

‘American Beauty’
USA, 1999 (117 minutes). Director: Sam Mendes. Cast: Kevin Spacey, Annette Bening, Mena Suvari, Thora Birch.
What is surprising is the public success of a film that is as clumsy as it is cynical, whose characters, some infantilized, some neurotic, arouse little empathy for the viewer. American Beauty is backed by an exemplary screenplay by Alan Bell (who went on to star in TV hits like Six Feet Under, True Blood and Banshee) that devastatingly satirizes the myth of the American Dream and ruthlessly dissects a seemingly exemplary family.

“With Death on the Trail”
North for Northwest. USA, 1959 (136 minutes). Directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Cast: Cary Grant, Eva-Marie Saint, James Mason
Many critics dismiss Death on the Trail as pure entertainment. If true, it’s an amazing entertainment that actually shows a playful spirit summed up in the image of Cary Grant being harassed by a small plane in a desert setting, something so implausible that it’s only thanks to Hitchcock that it can be believable – who only cared about the believable cinematic-. The teacher makes the ellipsis a narrative engine and exaggerates the McGuffin apology: Grant is being pursued after being mistaken for a spy who doesn’t actually exist.

“The House of Flying Daggers”
China, 2004 (119 minutes). Director: Zhang Yimou. Cast: Zhang Ziyi, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Andy Lau.
The great Zhang Yimou continued to pursue epic cinema even after the success of Hero and before the creative pinnacle of The Curse of the Golden Flower. The Chinese filmmaker builds up an equally emotional and tragic, memorable love story about the fall of the Tang Dynasty, embedded in beautiful images, between which he weaves overwhelming action sequences.
