Journalist Veruska Donato used Journalists’ Day on April 7 to take a stand against Rede Globo. Veruska worked at the station for more than 20 years and was released in 2021.
She wasn’t on the previous Globo channel, but posted a text on her Instagram profile to support her friends and criticize the broadcaster. The TV network has fired several professionals from journalism, including those with big careers.
“There is nothing to celebrate on April 7 during the week that the country’s largest network of journalists is laying off between 30 and 40 journalists,” wrote Veruska, who currently hosts the Balanço da Manhã newspaper, from TV Record in Mato Grosso , the great south. “It has to be said here that there is no justification for what the company has done. new times? At what times? We spend a good chunk of our time working shifts away from our children and companions to serve the company, as a legal entity we didn’t even have overtime.”
Earlier this year, the journalist filed a lawsuit against the broadcaster, collecting work debts and claiming she was morally harassed in relation to her appearance. According to Veruska, she would have developed burnout syndrome.
“Is it out of the game? Does this mean that it is part of the game to be verbally and often physically attacked by viewers who are unhappy with the company’s journalistic coverage?” asked the presenter. “You must mean that part of the capitalist game is always wanting more profit? Nothing justifies a company closing accounts in blue without qualms about firing, I’m sorry Liberals. Is it to have more money? Public funding should be given more consideration.”
The lawsuit filed against Globo is valued at BRL 13 million. In the document, Veruska explains that the journalists were accused of their clothing and appearance. They had to wear “educated” clothes that didn’t show “persistent bellies” or “big bellies.”
In 2021, before the journalist was fired, the INSS determined that she was no longer able to work. So Veruska was removed from the station for 77 days. She was released five days after her return to Globo. “Journalism should mourn,” the moderator ended her outburst.
