A furniture closet and two residential buildings devastated by a violent fire in Montérégie –

A violent fire that broke out in a carpentry workshop injured two and destroyed two apartment buildings Monday night in Sainte-Martine, Montérégie.

The fire started around 1:30 a.m. at a kitchen cabinet factory before quickly spreading to an adjacent apartment building on Dulude Street near Route 138, which was partially closed to traffic by the Ministry of Transport du Québec, Quebec, who was on site.

The flames also hit another building next to the company, whose premises are in Place Raquepas.

The fire departments of neighboring communities were called to help fight the fire, the flames of which were visible from afar.

When the fire brigade arrived, it was already a major fire that forced the evacuation of the buildings. The Ministry of Transport even sent its teams to secure the R-138. The Sûreté du Québec was also there to help evacuate the tenants of the six apartments, who were being looked after by the Red Cross on site.

Two people were injured, one of whom was taken to hospital with chest injuries, while a firefighter received minor injuries.

Due to the extent of the damage caused by this major fire, the cause of which is still unclear, the three buildings are in danger of being totaled.
