Violent fire in Lévis: two parents and their 8-year-old son in a coma

Two parents and their 8-year-old son who miraculously survived the fire at their home in Lévis over Easter weekend have seen their lives changed forever while still in a coma to treat their wounds.

“The good news is that her life is not in danger. But we have no idea how they will get out of it, whether there will be any consequences, Maxime Boutin sighs.

Early last Saturday, when everyone was sleeping peacefully, a violent fire broke out in the home of his brother Carl Boutin in Lévis. It was an accidental fire that broke out in the kitchen.

As Le Journal reported on Saturday, his wife Marie-Claude Desbiens and their son Evens had to jump from the second floor. The unconscious father had to be rescued from the flames by the pioneers.

“They had to resuscitate Carl before they got him into the ambulance, then we almost lost him two or three times the first night,” says Mr Boutin’s brother, who is still shaken five days after the tragedy.

The condition of the three family members who were transported to the hospital has stabilized, but they are not unemployed because of it. They were all placed in an induced coma to allow their bodies to heal better.

Burned to about 15% of his body and inhaled a significant amount of CO2, it was the family man who was most affected. He is about to receive a skin transplant.

Ms Desbiens and her son Evens suffered respiratory burns. The child’s vocal cords were also affected.

“It’s a bit like we’ve been holding our breath since it happened, waiting for answers,” sighs Mr Boutin’s sister Karina Vézina, thanking heaven the couple’s other children weren’t home when that happened fire broke out.

An unexpected solidarity

The family home was completely destroyed by the flames. According to relatives, nothing could be recovered, not even a few memories.

That’s why a Go Fund Me fundraiser was launched to help the couple experience less financial stress as they get back on their feet. More than $16,500 has already been raised in just a few days.

“It’s a little good to see that so many people have stood up for the supporters. They really need it,” says Ms. Vézina.
