Speaking to Byrdie last spring, the star revealed that the inspiration for creating Cay Skin came from a “traumatic” shoot in the Bahamas in 2018.
“I shot in the Bahamas sun for two days and nobody [on set] wanted me to reapply sunscreen because the ones we left had a blue or purple cast to them,” she explained.
With no protection from the harsh sun, Winnie’s skin suffered sun damage that required a doctor’s visit.
“When I finished the two day project I came back to my hotel and my skin was so red and tight. Doctors had to come to the hotel room and give me injections for pain and inflammation. It was a traumatic experience.’
Though the incident was agonizing, it inspired Winnie to create sunscreen that suits all skin tones in the hope that what happened to her wouldn’t happen to anyone else.
“It’s so important to protect your skin and there should be products that work for everyone,” she told the outlet. “That’s how the idea for Cay Skin came about.”
