The Chicago Police Department said the violent incident took place at a drugstore at 641 North Clark Street around 10:30 p.m. Sunday, when a man in his 40s spotted a scammer stealing items from shelves.
When the Good Samaritan tried to intervene and turned to the thief, the man flew into a rage, took out a sharp object and, according to police, stabbed the victim several times in the legs, face and neck.

Police say the victim spotted a man stealing merchandise at a drug store on North Clark Street on Sunday evening and attempted to intervene.
The victim, whose name has not been released, was taken to Northwestern Hospital in critical condition. WGN9.
The attacker fled the scene and remained at large as of Monday morning.
Sunday’s stabbing comes amid skyrocketing crime in the windy city, with burglaries up a whopping 61 percent in the first two months of 2022 and overall crime up 34 percent from the same period last year.
The second city, under the leadership of progressive Cook County District Attorney Kim Fox, is in the throes of a crime epidemic as homicides, sexual assaults and robberies rise.
Like other major US cities, including San Francisco and New York, Chicago has been hit hard by shoplifting.
Chicago’s bustling North Michigan Avenue shopping district has become the epicenter of massive robberies, with roving gangs of young men swarming luxury stores, snatching merchandise and running.
Between November 2021 and January of this year, the same Burberry store was attacked three times by thieves.
The suspect took out a sharp object and stabbed the Good Samaritan, causing serious injury.
In November, more than a dozen people broke into a Louis Vuitton store in the Chicago suburb of Oakbrook and stole $120,000 worth of items, which were seen being carried away in trash bags on CCTV video.
Last fall, Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raul said that large-scale shoplifting organized by organized crime is costing retailers in the US about $45 billion in annual losses.
Raul formed the Retail Organized Crime Task Force, made up of public and private organizations, to address the issue.
