This “remake” of Pokémon Red and Blue with HD 2D graphics is great –

A 3D artist had fun recreating the very first generation of Pokémon games with HD 2D rendering.

An entire generation was shaped by Pokémon Red and Blue, the very first installment in a saga that continues to be hugely successful to this day. Today, thanks to dott’s work, spotted by Eurogamer in an article published on April 19th, she’s talking about her again. This passionate Japanese RPG (J-RPG) artist had fun reinventing our childhood Pokémon games with HD 2D graphics.

The HD 2D is a rendering attributed to Square Enix, which has decided to pay homage to the RPGs of yesteryear with a very particular retro style. Iic, 2D pixel art elements navigating 3D decorations are highlighted with staging close to the diorama (the camera is placed above) and beautiful blur effects in the background. This allows characters to stand out while maintaining flat (2D) gameplay. Square Enix used it for games like Triangle Strategy and Octopath Traveler.

Pokemon in HD 2D is great

The touch of nostalgia that the HD 2D stream seeks is undeniable. And of course, it works 100% for Pokémon Red and Blue – a game duo released on the Game Boy in 1996. dott used Unreal Engine 5 for this project, which the Pokémon Company would like to emulate. The company loves updating the old works of its iconic license, and dott’s proposal is both original and successful.

This is all the more true given that the latest Pokémon games haven’t been particularly brilliant visually. On the contrary, Pokémon Purple and Pokémon Scarlet were pinned due to their technical flaws, forcing Nintendo to apologize. What dott delivers is also more interesting and refreshing than the Pokémon Sparkling Diamond and Pokémon Sparkling Pearl remakes, where some of the graphical choices are odd.

On his YouTube channel, dott shares comparisons between old Pokémon Red and Blue and his project. A chance to remember how far technology has come since the ’90s, and most importantly, show how loyal he is to the games he’s remastered.
