Gustavo Petro meets with his American counterpart Joe Biden

Colombian President Gustavo Petro is set to meet with US President Joe Biden at the White House this Thursday to discuss issues related to anti-drug policies, peace, migration, investment opportunities and climate change.

According to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, both heads of state will also talk about deepening bilateral ties in terms of economic cooperation.

Before meeting Joe Biden, Gustavo Petro explained that the meeting with his US counterpart will come at a crucial time to strengthen ties “not only in the fight against drug trafficking, but also in protecting the Amazon, climate change and of rural development”.

Gustavo Petro has insisted the US must work together to change the country’s current drug policy.

The meeting between Gustavo Petro and Joe Biden follows a formal invitation from the US government. This Thursday’s meeting will be the first official meeting between the two leaders.

The President of Colombia landed in New York City last Sunday to begin his visit to the United States.
