Despite initial appearances, LeBron James did not pay for a verified Twitter account.
As of early Thursday, James still had a blue tick after Twitter removed her from users who didn’t pay $8 to keep her.
Social media reacted heavily to James’ tick, which was intact after comments in March in which the NBA’s all-time scorer tweeted that he would not pay to use the social media and news platform.
But it seems that Elon Musk has taken the bill for James. According to a report by The Verge, a Twitter employee emailed James “to renew a free subscription…on behalf of Elon Musk.”
Musk tweeted Thursday night in response to the report; “I pay for a few personally.”
Elon Musk announced Thursday night that he had paid for LeBron James’ Twitter verification
At first it seemed like LeBron James paid his money to stay verified on Twitter
However, Elon Musk soon debunked this as nothing more than a myth when responding to a report
On March 31, the Lakers star insisted he would not pay for verified status.
He wrote on his account: “Guess my blue tick will be gone soon because if you know me I ain’t paying the five.”
James mistakenly thought it would cost him five dollars, but it’s actually eight – and the feature, dubbed “Twitter Blue,” is already available for users willing to pay for it.
James is currently fighting for the Lakers in their NBA playoff series against the Memphis Grizzlies. The series is currently tied 1-1, with the Grizzlies winning Wednesday night’s game.
Dillon Brooks mocked James, 38, after the game, calling him “old” and saying he didn’t respect him. The 38-year-old dropped 28 points, alongside 12 rebounds and eight assists in the 103-93 loss.
James and the Lakers have a chance to regroup with Games 3 and 4 in Los Angeles.
