It’s been an even series so far, both games ending with just one goal. The “Canes”, on the other hand, lead 2-0 and can confidently approach the next two duels in the UBS Arena.
Five minutes into overtime, Fast accepted a long bar from captain Jordan Staal to beat Ilya Sorokin with a quick throw. The poor formation of the Russian played a trick on him again.
Jaccob Slavin, known for the quality of his wrist throw, struck from an impossible angle to level the game 3-3 midway through the third period. The defender bounced the puck off Sorokin’s shoulder to hit the target behind the red line.
Creator of the winning goal on Monday, Stefan Noesen, struck again in the second period on the power play. Paul Stastny also shook the ropes while Brent Burns had two assists for the second game in a row.
The Canes had to cope with a goalkeeper change at short notice because Frederik Andersen was unable to play between the posts due to a virus. Veteran Antti Raanta, despite some generosity, took on the job as a substitute. He blocked 23 shots and was beaten by Kyle Palmieri, Mathew Barzal and Brock Nelson.
Bad news for the Hurricanes, however, who will be without striker Teuvo Teravainen. The Finn broke his hand and needs surgery. He should be out at least until the end of this series. Remember that Carolina already has to compose without Andrei Svechnikov and Max Pacioretty.
Game number 3 takes place on Friday.
