South Africa: Ten family members killed in their home

Ten members of the same family in South Africa were killed at their home by unidentified gunmen on Friday, police said, as rampant crime has plagued recent killings in that country.

Police said seven women and three men were fatally injured in the shooting in Imbali, a township south of Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal province (southeast).

“According to initial information, unknown perpetrators stormed a property in Pietermaritzburg and attacked the family,” police spokeswoman Lirandzu Themba said in a statement.

The motivation of the killers was not immediately known. Police Minister Bheki Cele should go to the crime scene.

Shootings of this kind are not uncommon in South Africa, a country with one of the highest murder rates in the world.
