A pregnant dog named Bella gave her family a real scare, but the scare wasn’t due to complications at birth, it was because more puppies were born than expected.
Bella comes from the Cane Corso breed and has been kept under veterinary supervision by her owner Jana Aquilina since the beginning of her pregnancy.
Four puppies showed up on ultrasound, but surprisingly 15 were born on the day of birth. FIFTEEN PUPPIES! Yes… 15 cuties came out of Bella’s little body. There’s space, isn’t there?!

Stunned and delighted by what happened, on April 14, Jana shared a video on the TikTok profile @aquacanine_ showing these beauties of the world. After all, it was a nice Easter present, as she said in the caption.
According to news portal Hepper, there are usually between four and six puppies born in a litter of Cane Corso, but there are always exceptions, some litters can be born smaller and others larger like Bella’s.
Now, what affects the size of a litter? There are several factors that have an influence, some of which are:
- Breed and Size: If the dog is large, there will likely be a larger number of puppies in the litter.
- Age: The Cane Corso is most fertile between 2 and 5 years of age.
- Genes: Dogs with a more diverse gene pool have larger litters.
- And of course health and food.
Now the question remains, why did Bella’s ultrasound only show four small hearts? In an interview with Newsweek, Doctor Matthew McCarthy, founder of Juniper Valley Animal Hospital in Queens, New York, clarifies:
“I can think of several reasons why the ultrasound could be wrong in this case,” McCarthy said. “time is essential. On ultrasound, a fetal puppy’s heart can be seen as a distinct flicker between days 23 and 25, while its head and body can be distinguished between days 28 and 30. And with a large number of puppies, Not all puppies are at exactly the same developmental stage So if you scan on the 23rd you might see four puppy heartbeats, but on the 25th you might see 15″.
