The Walking Dead Negan/Maggie spin-off: AMC orders Isle of the Dead

Proof that you can’t humiliate a good woman – or, for that matter, a (previously?) bad man. AMC announced on Monday that it had greenlit a The Walking Dead spin-off centered on Maggie Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan.

The new series, “Isle of the Dead,” which premieres in 2023, will follow the unlikely couple – given that he killed her husband and all – in what the network calls “a post-apocalyptic Manhattan long cut off from the mainland.”

“The crumbling city,” adds AMC, “is filled with the dead and residents who have turned New York into their own world, full of anarchy, danger, beauty and horror.”

The Walking Dead veteran Eli Jorne has been brought in to executive produce the six-episode season 1 alongside Cohan and Morgan, with Scott M. Gimple, Chief Content Manager of The Walking Dead Universe, overseeing the entire show.

Giorne “created something incredibly special,” Cohen said, adding, “I can’t wait for the fans to see what we have in store for Maggie and Negan.” For his part, Morgan, who expressed to TVLine last fall his openness to the idea of a spin-off, exclaimed: “Walkers in urban settings have always been such a cool way, but 5th Avenue [the] Empire State Building, [the] The Statue of Liberty? The greatest city in the world?!?

“The setting is amazing,” he continued, “but the story Eli Jorne came up with is even better. Buckle up guys, Isle of the Dead is about to reinvent the Walking Dead universe.”

After Fear the Walking Dead, The Walking Dead: World Beyond and the in-development Tales of the Walking Dead and an as-yet-untitled Daryl/Carol spin-off, Isle of the Dead will be the fifth offshoot of AMC’s original drama. Based on the comic book series by Robert Kirkman.

So what do you think? Doesn’t Isle of the Dead sound like the best spin-off idea you’ve ever heard?
