In the past Google has said that they will not offer SEO certification like they do for Google Ads, Google Analytics and a whole host of certifications that they offer. But that seems to have changed when Google announced the new Google Career Certificate scholarships for US companies.
Google’s announcement is positive, don’t get me wrong, Google is offering up to 500 Google Career Certificate scholarships each to US companies to train their employees. “Companies can use Google Career Certificates to train their employees for jobs in data analysis, digital marketing and e-commerce, IT support, project management, or user experience (UX) design,” Google wrote.
These courses are led by Googlers, Google said, “All course instructors are Google employees who are subject matter experts.”
When you jump into the digital marketing course, you’ll see that “Search Engine Optimization Specialist” is on the list:
So will you try to get certified by Google for SEO? Do you think this is a good idea from Google? Can you imagine all the SEOs getting this and now saying that Google has certified them as SEO professionals?
This can get interesting.

Here’s the other side of the coin, why shouldn’t that be a big deal?
Isn’t marketing something people can learn?

Not sure if my “shock tweet” is clear that I’m referring to the certification part and not the learning part

So is Google now certifying SEO professionals?
How is the output controlled so they don’t use leverage (and Google’s name) for dubious deceptive practices?
