Oppositionists protest after election in Paraguay news

After the presidential elections in Paraguay, supporters of the defeated candidate, Paraguayo Cuba, protested against the result. Hundreds of them gathered in front of the electoral office in the capital Asunción yesterday and accused the authorities of electoral fraud, the ABC Color newspaper reported. “They stole our election,” Cubas told Nanduti radio station. The police cordoned off the headquarters of the electoral office.

Elsewhere in the South American country, supporters of the opposition politician set up roadblocks. In Sunday’s election, the candidate of the conservative Partido Colorado, Santiago Pena, was elected as the new president.

His party has only lost an election once in the past 76 years. Long-time parliamentarian Efrain Alegre, from the Radical Liberal Party, came in second. Cubas, who presents himself as a critic of the system, came in third place.
