Gaza Strip: Islamist dies after hunger strike

Khader Adnan died after refusing food for 87 days. Shortly after his death, rockets were fired at Israel.

According to Israeli sources, a prominent member of the extremist Islamic Jihad group died in prison after going on a hunger strike. Shortly thereafter, three rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip at Israel. This threatens an escalation of violence.

Khader Adnan was found unresponsive in his cell on Tuesday after being denied food for 87 days, prison authorities said. Adnan refused medical treatment. The rockets fired from the Gaza Strip landed in Israeli open ground. An air alert had been triggered in the region close to the border.

Israel accused Adnan of terrorism

“Our fight continues and the enemy will realize once again that their crimes will not go unanswered,” Islamic Jihad said. “The resistance will continue with all strength and determination.” Representation of prisoners in the WAED Gaza Strip spoke of a cold-blooded execution of Adnan.

The 45-year-old was a well-known figure in Islamic Jihad in the occupied West Bank, which Israel conquered in the 1967 war. Israel has accused Adnan of terrorism. During his various arrests since 2004, he has carried out at least five hunger strikes. Like the Islamic Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, Islamic Jihad rejects the peace agreements between the Palestinians and Israel and calls for their destruction.
