The highest mountain in the world has claimed another victim. An American climber has died on Everest in Nepal, the organizer of his expedition said on Tuesday. This tragedy marks the first death of a foreign climber this season on this mountain.
The 69-year-old climber died suddenly Monday while acclimatizing at Camp 2, about 6,400 meters above sea level. “He wasn’t feeling well […]. Efforts are being made to bring his body down,” Tshering Sherpa of Beyul Adventure, a local partner of US-based expedition operator International Mountain Guides, told Pasang. Weather conditions are currently hampering operations.
The spring season, which runs from mid-April to late May, began tragically on Everest this year with the disappearance of three Nepalese climbers last month. The trio were crossing the dangerous Khumbu Icefall to deliver supplies to Camp 1, the first leg en route to the summit of Everest, when they were hit by a mass of snow and dragged to the bottom of a crevasse.
