An undetermined number of people died and at least 30 were injured in an accident caused by a sandstorm this Monday (January 1) involving between 40 and 60 vehicles in the state of Illinois in the United States.

Local police spokesman Captain Ryan Starrick told the press that between 40 and 60 “passenger vehicles” suffered multiple collisions on Interstate I55 and that there were records of “multiple deaths.”

Starrick added that at least 30 injured were transported to hospitals. Among the various vehicles involved, two trucks were set on fire in the accident, the spokesman said.

The Illinois Department of Transportation said on Twitter that I55 was closed in both directions in Sangamon and Montgomery counties due to “numerous accidents caused by a sandstorm that severely reduced visibility.” State police said traffic on I55 was diverted to a nearby freeway and urged drivers to seek alternate routes.
