In the moving documentary, Ed tearfully reflected on his wife Cherry’s cancer diagnosis in 2022 while she was pregnant with their second child.
Doctors discovered that 30-year-old Cherry had a tumor in her arm in February last year when she was six months pregnant with her second child, daughter Jupiter.
In his Disney+ documentary The Sum Of It All, the couple recalled their “terrible” start to 2022, when Cherry was battling cancer, Ed’s best friend Jamal Edwards died suddenly, and a lawsuit over his song “Shape Of You” was initiated in which Ed was accused of plagiarism and which he later won.
“I was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, which was a huge s*****r,” Cherry said of why she said yes to letting the cameras into her notorious personal life.
“But it made me think massively about our mortality. We are all human. I told Ed that I would never have agreed to do something like that, but it kept me thinking all year, “If I die, how will people perceive me? What will you leave behind?”.
“For Ed, he wants to say, ‘I’m not just this music machine, a robot trying to be number one. i am a father I’m a son, husband, friend.” And I’ve been thinking massively. It wasn’t until this year that I thought, “I could die.” It was terrible.’
When Cherry first sought medical help, she was initially told by a doctor “this is really bad” and that she had cancer.
The mother-of-two immediately called Ed and told him to cancel all his plans while they waited an agonizing month for the full report.
But Cherry, who was six months pregnant at the time, was told there were no treatment regimens that would work with her pregnancy.
After a sequencing test was performed on the tumor, the couple found that it was much less severe than originally thought and that surgery could be performed after she gave birth to Jupiter.
Cherry said: “It was the most incredible news. I almost threw up when the surgeon told us we could wait until the end of the pregnancy to remove the tumor.
“We didn’t have to worry about delivering the baby early.”
But the couple faced the most devastating blow when a day later Ed’s best friend Jamal died suddenly at the age of 31.

Creepy: Ed’s documentary series got him reflecting on his wife Cherry Seaborn’s cancer diagnosis, which came just weeks before his pal Jamal Edwards died from shock
“I was hit by heavy stuff one after the other. They found a tumor in Cherry’s arm. The diagnosis wasn’t good,” Ed said.
‘She was pregnant and there’s nothing they can do. Then suddenly I’m in this three-week trial. Then Jamal dies.
“The moment you find out that the worst thing in the world has happened to someone you really love with all your heart, you feel like you’re about to drown and you can’t get out of it.
“I remember sitting in this specialist’s waiting room and thinking the worst was about to happen. I’m worried about Cherry.
“The unborn daughter, that is within her. You start writing a song and you let off some air and that’s why songs are written.’
His wife, Cherry, also admitted that Ed hadn’t “processed” Jamal’s loss, adding, “The difficult thing about grief is that in the beginning everyone’s gathering around you, six months later that’s wearing off.
“Everything has been so busy and there is an attitude, especially in Brtian, to keep going. From a processing perspective, I’m in a much better place. I don’t think Ed is there yet.
“There’s no way he’s had time to process things and be at peace with them. He was too busy. He has to stop. He has to process, he has not processed at all.
Ed and Cherry welcomed Jupiter and announced their arrival in May with a sweet Instagram post. The couple are also the proud parents of two-year-old Lyra.
Later in the documentary, Cherry gave an update on her health after going in for a check-up appointment months after the initial surgery – and was thrilled to be told the tumor hadn’t come back.
She said: “Yesterday I had a follow-up scan in my arm to see if the tumor had come back. We were silent in the car, afraid it was going to be bad.
“It was super triggering to be in the same room when things weren’t going so positively at the beginning of the year. The surgeon looked at the scans and everything looks fine. The lymph nodes have all calmed down. That was excellent. it was huge for us.’
Sheeranville is not without controversy, with Ed clashing with his neighbors in the past.
The star has been embroiled in several legal battles over its rights and the rights of its neighbors to expand their respective landmasses.
Last year, Ed’s neighbor, Anthony Robinson, won a fight against the superstar who turned down Mr. Robinson’s plans to expand his back garden.
Mr Robinson, who lives three doors down from the pop star’s home, was given permission to extend his back garden by 50 meters despite Ed’s objections.
Mr Robinson already owned the field behind his four-bedroom house – which is valued at £550,000 – and wanted to incorporate part of it into his private garden.
But Ed, who had started his own massive construction project just a few hundred yards away, didn’t want the space to be domesticated.
He claimed it would “expand the village into the countryside in an unplanned and artificial way”.
Although the council objected to Mr Robinson’s proposal, many neighbors initially wrote to support him and his plans were eventually approved.
Last June, the singer had to fight to keep the 16ft pub sign he hung outside a barn that was converted into a drinking den.
Despite obtaining planning permission for the pub in 2017, he had not received permission for the sign, leading locals to wonder why it was there.
Sheeran was also told not to swim in his wild pond after being granted permission to build it on the condition that it would provide a natural habitat for frogs, newts and dragonflies.
The council visited his property and specifically banned “recreational activities such as swimming.”
He was also forced to remove his outdoor sauna in a trailer next to the pond after neighbors complained.
Ed bought his first house on the site, a new build, in 2012 for around £900,000.
