The Supreme Federal Court (STF), Brazil’s highest court, on Tuesday criminally indicted another 200 people over the January 8 coup act against the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
By eight votes in favor, following that of the trainer in the case, Judge Alexandre de Moraes, and two against, the Supreme Court decided to indict 200 defendants for involvement in acts of invasion and looting of the headquarters of the three powers in the country Capital of Brazil.
Judges André Mendonça and Nunes Marques voted to charge only those arrested on the day of the crimes and not those arrested a day later in the camps set up in front of the army barracks.
The vote of the eleventh district judge, Ricardo Lewandowski, was not taken into account due to the ongoing retirement proceedings.
The radicals attacking the three powers have been encamped outside the army barracks for more than two months, demanding a coup d’état, in a stance that former President Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022), leader of the extreme right, did not condemn and came even support
As a result of these events, 2,151 people have been arrested, of whom around 300 remain in detention while the rest will stand trial at liberty.
At the end of April, the highest court approved the indictment of the first 100 people accused of the attacks.
The Supreme Court has included Bolsonaro in the investigation to determine whether, although he was in the United States that day from where he returned on March 30, he instigated this movement or had any role in planning the coup attempt has played.
