The Gotham City Vice spin-off has been put on hold, according to Batman director Matt Reeves.
On Monday, on an episode of the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, Reeves revealed that the previously announced series, which he called “Gotham’s cop show,” is currently on hiatus.
“One thing we don’t do that I was going to do… So there’s a Gotham cop show that’s actually on hold. We don’t actually do that,” Reeves said.
The show was announced in July 2020 featuring Reeves and was originally intended to be a prequel to the film. It wasn’t the only spin-off revolving around characters in Robert Pattinson’s new Batman movie. A Colin Farrell Penguin show was also announced and is still in full swing (Reeves describes him as “almost like Scarface; the rise of this character we all know will reach mythical status”).
However, in an interview with The Cyber Nerds, as reported by The Direct, Reeves indicated that the show may have taken a new direction, focusing instead on Arkham Asylum. There have been rumors about the Arkham series, but Reeves’ quotes on the subject could mean that the Arkham show and the Gotham PD show are actually the same project.
“The story has a story that kind of developed,” Reeves explained. “Actually we are now [moved] more in the realm of what exactly is going to happen in the world of Arkham, because it’s related to our movie, and some of the characters…almost leaning towards the idea…it’s like a horror movie or a haunted house, which is Arkham.”
Prior to this reveal, the Gotham PD show had already faced a bit of a roadblock with showrunner Terence Winter leaving in November 2020 due to creative differences. But even with these roadblocks, it’s unlikely this will be the last time we see Batman Reeves and Pattinson. The film premiered on March 4 and grossed $128 million at the box office over the weekend.
