UPDATE 2:15 p.m: The WGA announced Friday afternoon that they will be hosting the MTV Movie & TV Awards on Sunday, which will be produced on behalf of the WGA. That means talent wanting to participate would likely have to cross a picket line.

PREVIOUS: The MTV Movie & TV Awards are scheduled to take place this Sunday, but the show will look different than usual.

The first major awards show after WGA and APMTP failed to agree on a new deal and writers went on strike, the MTV Movie & TV Awards will be hostless after Drew Barrymore dropped out to support striking writers yesterday.

There are no known plans for the WGA to picket the event, which will be held at the Barker Hangar in Los Angeles. Even if that doesn’t happen, a large proportion of the talent invited to participate — both as presenters and nominees — have withdrawn, sources said. A picket line would make it difficult for those who remained to break in and deliver equipment and other supplies from carters.

MTV announced yesterday that there will be no press access, red carpet interviews or talent interviews ahead of the show.

According to production sources, MTV Movie and TV Awards director Joe DeMaio has updated the crew on the talent penalties (numbers are in flux but estimates say they could potentially reach 75%). This year’s nominees include the stars of some of Hollywood’s biggest films and television series of the past year (both scripted and unscripted).

As a result, the format of the ceremony is evolving and becoming more of a clip show with a host of pre-taped segments including the winners’ speeches.

“The show may not look and feel like what we originally planned, but the team is working hard to put on another great show and give fans a chance to see all the film and TV this year celebrate,” said Bruce Gilmer, the president of music, musical talent, programming and events at Paramount Global, in a statement yesterday. “Our team is the best in the business – it has been rotating for several years, whether shut down during Covid, without fans (ie GOATS) and has been able to bring our shows to the fans every single one. Year. This year is no different.’
