Students in public schools in the city of Fort Lauderdale and other communities in Broward County, Fla., are only allowed to bring backpacks and clear bags to school beginning in the second semester.

The teaching network explained that this is a safety measure in addition to all others that are already in place.

The chain’s superintendent, Earlean C. Smiley, explained that the idea is to quickly identify the items that students take to school.

There are some exceptions, students are allowed to bring a small bag for toiletries, boxes for groceries, boxes for sports equipment or musical instruments.
