The inter-ethnic clashes that have shaken the Indian state of Manipur (north-east) since Wednesday and have led to the deployment of soldiers have left 54 dead, according to a report published on Saturday May 6 by the Indian news agency PTI. So far, no official report has been released by the local authorities.

Hundreds of Indian soldiers were dispatched on Thursday with orders to shoot on sight “in extreme cases” to try to restore calm. Authorities also blocked internet access and imposed a curfew. After further acts of violence on Friday evening, the situation remained tense on Saturday, the police authorities said.
