The alcohol loved by Brazilians is nonexistent in some countries, at least not for citizens born there. The fact that alcohol is forbidden is mostly related to religious beliefs.

Some tourists may have special conditions for consumption as noted during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. In total, there are 14 countries that ban alcohol to some extent (in whole or in part). We quote some of them and how it works there.

In which countries is alcohol consumption prohibited?

India

In India, the second most populous country in the world, some states have laws prohibiting the consumption and sale of alcohol. However, the law is legal in most parts of the country. To cite just a few examples, alcohol is completely banned in the states of Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland.

Bangladesh

Similar to the neighboring country, sales and consumption are regulated by the state. Only certain licensed bars, restaurants and hotels are allowed to sell the drink. The legal drinking age in the country is 21.

Brunei is a small country in Asia. Its population is 445,000 inhabitants (2021). In this region, Islamic law applies to all its residents. This means that the consumption of alcohol is forbidden for Muslims. NonMuslim tourists can consume alcohol at licensed places.

United Arab Emirates

As cities like Abu Dhabi and Dubai have become world famous tourist attractions, foreigners can consume their alcoholic beverages in licensed bars and hotels. One should not consume in public, let alone get drunk. In Sharjah, for example, nonMuslims must obtain a government alcohol license. It allows its consumption, but not in public. The legal drinking age is 21 years.

Iranian policy is extremely strict regarding the consumption of alcoholic beverages by its population. Citizens are not allowed to drink alcohol in public or private places. Anyone caught using it can be fined or even imprisoned.

Pakistan

Foreigners visiting the Asian country must go to places where consumption is permitted. In the main cities, with more frequent tourist visits, it is easier to find. Also, as in most countries, consumption in a public place is illegal.

Mauritania

The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is an African country of about 4.6 million people (2021 data). Alcohol consumption is restricted. In other words, drinking alcohol in public or private places is not allowed. Citizens caught in the act can face fines and even imprisonment. Visitors must be aware of the condition and respect the laws applicable to all.
