Coronation of Charles III: Critical Mélenchon "the dripping syrups of monarchy"

Jean-Luc Mélenchon this Saturday attacked the “dripping syrups of the British monarchy” and the “democratic aberration” that he saw as the coronation of King Charles III.

Rebel leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon on Saturday criticized “the dripping syrup of the monarchy” for King Charles III’s coronation. and Queen Camilla in London, while LR boss Eric Ciotti hailed “a historic moment” for the Brits.

While the Head of State Emmanuel Macron, present at the coronation, congratulated the monarchs “Friends of France”, Jean-Luc Mélenchon regretted that “so many people live in misery while the disgusting syrups of the monarchy (…) drip on television”, during a speech a demonstration in Marseille.

“Something Disgusting”

For the leader of the rebels and former Bouches-du-Rhône MP, “there is something disgusting about this cinema with this disguised man covered in jewels and precious stones in front of a people so humiliated by neoliberal politics”.

It “reminds us why we are so deeply Republicans,” he added, quoting Saint-Just and Robespierre: “Kings are monsters who accept such display in the face of so much suffering”.

For his part, the rebellious MP Alexis Corbière denounced “the media that were made aware of the coronation ceremony of Charles III. “saturated” and “stuffed with stupid pro-monarchist comments”.

“Monarchy is an anti-democratic aberration”

“It’s the choice of our British friends,” he admitted, “but we French are Republicans because monarchy is an anti-democratic aberration.”

On the other side of the political spectrum, Republican leader Eric Ciotti hailed a “historic moment for the British people” and tweeted all his “congratulations” to King Charles and all his “good luck to the head from the UK”.

And for MPs leader LR Olivier Marleix “the coronation” in London “reminds us of what is sacred to the nation itself. Long live the king!” he tweeted.
