Nine people were killed in a shooting at a Texas mall on Saturday, police said. Authorities also confirmed that there are seven injured victims who have been referred to hospitals in the region. The shooter was shot down.

The attack happened in the afternoon at a busy mall in Allen, 40 km from Dallas. Police said they believe the shooter acted alone. He was killed by a police officer outside the facility.

Management of 16 hospitals in the region reported that they had admitted eight injured victims, ranging in age from 5 to 61. Firefighters said they helped nine injured, two of whom died.

“He heard gunshots and neutralized the suspect,” said the police department’s Brian Harvey. “Also called an ambulance.”

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott called the shooting an “unspeakable tragedy.”

A survey by the Gun Violence Archive group indicates that the United States has recorded 198 mass shootings since the beginning of the year. That’s the highest number for the period since 2016. The study includes cases where four or more people were injured or killed, not counting the shooter.
