According to Kiev, the Russian military is in a weakened position. Former Russian secret service agent Igor Girkin also sees an imminent defeat.

Girkin is believed to be one of the main culprits in the crash of flight MH17. The Malaysia Airlines passenger plane was hit by a Russian anti-aircraft missile over Ukraine in 2014 and crashed, killing all 298 on board. For this, Girkin was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Dutch court, and an international criminal warrant exists to find him.
