Ukraine, Turkey say no to US: no Russian S 400s in Kiev

Turkey has rejected a US proposal that Ankara should send the S-400 air defense systems bought by Russia to Kiev. This was stated by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, quoted by Turkey’s Anadolu Agency.

“The United States asked us to send the S-400 to Ukraine and we said no,” the minister said, explaining that this proposal “is unacceptable as it harms Turkish sovereignty.”

The United States has excluded Turkey from the F35 program in recent years after acquiring the Russian air defense system. Turkish officials have repeatedly said that Turkey bought the S-400 for reasons of national security and no other country has the right to interfere. When Turkey’s protracted effort to buy a defense system from the United States failed in 2017, Ankara decided to sign a deal with Russia, according to Anadolu. US officials have opposed its use, arguing that the S-400 would not be compatible with NATO systems.
