Jim Furyk learned from his 2018 experience

As he took the reins of the American team in anticipation of France’s controversial 2018 Ryder Cup, Jim Furyk thought he was more in the center of the action. The veteran quickly understood that he was only the leader and leader of the training.

His eyes and ears on the course were his assistants David Duval, Zach Johnson and Matt Kuchar. He pointed his nose at the Golf National several times, but without being able to pursue his men in the way he would like.

“I’d played in the Ryder Cup nine times as a player. I didn’t think the captain’s role could be so diverse, he said in an exclusive interview with the Journal. You hardly see golf. You have to think, reflect, direct and make decisions.

“These decisions are made after the assistants’ analyses,” he added. We look at the results and try to implement a good system.”

to learn from mistakes

In team competitions from 2015 to 2017, Furyk previously served as assistant captain at both the prestigious Ryder Cup and the Presidents Cup. Installed in the driver’s seat in the suburbs of Paris, the experience chilled him at the American quid pro quo.

Despite a disappointing result with the defeat, the 52-year-old prefers to put this adventure in the column of good experiences. And then he celebrated the big win in Whistling Straits in 2021 when he endorsed Steve Stricker.

Additionally, it would not come as a surprise for him to relive the Ryder Cup adventure in preparation for the Montreal event in 2024. This will be held in Rome this fall. It’s rumored across the branches that he’ll be named second-in-command to Captain Zach Johnson very soon.

Furyk will therefore be able to test the water temperature with that fierce, well-oiled American machine that swept away the Europeans in Whistling Straits in 2021 and beat the Internationals at Quail Hollow last fall.

Over the next few months, the head of the American formation will choose his deputies. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Tiger Woods very active behind the scenes at the team. He and Furyk often teamed up at competitions. He had also chosen it among his discretionary choices during the Ryder Cup in Paris.

In the rich history of the Presidents Cup, fans remember this 2007 duel between Tiger and Mike Weir at the Royal Montreal. The Canadian had achieved a great and spectacular win in the singles games. Also in Montreal, Woods missed his first ax in the pros in 1997.

Hard and destructive core

With 18 months to go before the competition, which will be held at the Royal Montreal, it’s still early to determine the 12 golfers who will compete under the colors of the Stars and Stripes. Until then, however, nothing should change in the hard core of the formation with Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Scottie Scheffler and Collin Morikawa.

Although the layout has changed and will be handed over to the Internationals, the host team, the new American captain knows the Montreal course well. He competed in the 2007 edition of the Presidents Cup. In 2014 he also won the second Canadian Open held in the metropolis.
