Fighting in Sudan has displaced more than 700,000 people in the country since mid-April, the UN reported on Tuesday (May 9). “That’s more than twice as many as in the previous week,” said a spokesman for the United Nations Migration Organization (IOM). In early May, the UN also estimated that violence had made 117,000 refugees in other countries since the conflict began on April 15.
Clashes between the regular army and Rapid Support Forces paramilitaries are concentrated in the capital Khartoum and in the Darfur region. Almost no hospitals are functioning in these two areas and most of the humanitarian reserves have been bombed or looted. The numerous ceasefires announced were hardly observed and the NGO Acled has already counted more than 750 dead in the country. The Sudanese authorities also report at least 5,000 injuries.
Negotiations in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, have begun but have not resulted in “major progress,” according to a Saudi diplomat. These discussions are not about a political solution to the conflict: they should only enable agreement on safe corridors for humanitarian aid arriving on the east coast to feed and care for the civilians trapped in Khartoum and Darfur.
