Waitz/Methane Ordinance: Stop Climate Killer Methane

EU Parliament takes strong stance in trialogue talks

Strasbourg (OTS) – The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is urgently calling for a massive reduction in methane emissions to meet the climate target of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees. Methane is the main component of natural gas. Even more than 20 years after the EU Commission presented its first methane strategy, there are still no rules for methane emissions in the EU. That must change now. The European Parliament calls for a ban on routine venting, methane venting and flaring, obligations to quickly detect and repair leaks in pipelines and valves, a binding target to reduce methane emissions by 2030 and that the new law also apply to imports. of gas, oil and coal by 2026.

Thomas Waitz, Greens MEP and co-chair of the European Green Party, says: “The European Parliament is determined to stop the climate-killing methane. Routine venting and flaring of methane is irresponsible and fuels the global climate crisis. Capturing and uselessly escaping gas also helps with the energy crisis. Most methane emissions occur outside the EU, so it stands to reason that strict rules also apply to imports of gas, coal and oil. Reducing methane emissions means more climate protection and more energy sovereignty”.

The Methane Regulation is an essential part of the Green Deal and the Fit for 55 package. The dossier now enters the so-called trilogue, the negotiations between Member States, the Commission and the European Parliament.
