Lula to present his plan to resolve Ukraine conflict at G7 summit

After meeting Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte this Tuesday in Brasilia, Lula said in a press statement that his country was “making great efforts” to form a group of nations to help negotiate a peace deal.

“I think this is the time for diplomacy, not war. Everyone knows that Brazil condemned the territorial invasion of Ukraine. But at the same time, the continuation of the war will only lead to death. We need to find someone to talk about peace and Brazil is ready for that,” said the Brazilian President.

Lula said he has already transferred the leaders of China and the UK his idea of ​​creating a group of intermediary countries and that he will do so with all whom he will meet at the next G7 meeting.

According to Lula, each of the parties to the conflict has their own reasons.

“Ukraine really cannot accept the occupation of its territory, it must resist. The European Union has its reasons for the decision it has taken [de apoyar a Kiev]’ he added, pointing out that Brazil and other countries also have their reasons for looking for a solution.

For his part, Mark Rutte acknowledged that his position on a conflict which he stressed threatens the values ​​of the Netherlands and its security is not the same as Lula’s.

“I explained [a Lula] that we also deliver arms to Ukraine, because if we hadn’t done that, Kiev would have fallen in the first few weeks,” said the prime minister, who nonetheless praised Brasilia’s peace initiatives.

The Brazilian President, on the other hand, announced this He has sent his top adviser, former Foreign Minister Celso Amorim, to Kyiv to speak with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskyy.

Amorim, who has already been to Moscow where he met Russian President Vladimir Putin, will meet the Ukrainian President this Wednesday.
