The threat of a crack in the entire mountain face surrounding the village of Brienz in Switzerland is forcing authorities to evacuate residents of their home by Friday.
Their fate depends on the roar of the mountain. The rock face overlooking the village of Brienz in Switzerland collapses. In recent weeks the phenomenon has accelerated as imposing rocks descend down the valley. The 70 residents are being threatened and have even been ordered to evacuate. Lina has been here for 35 years, packing her bags so she might never come back. “It’s a part of my life that’s over,” she laments. Others still hope that their house will be spared.
Evacuation of residents on Friday
Radars, laser measurements, all movements of the mountain are under scrutiny, one base in particular. “It is in danger of collapsing, and the entire side would then lose its supporting effect,” explains geologist Stefan Schneider. The ground is moving, some houses are already cracked. Spectacular measures to drain the soil have been launched, but the threat remains and villagers will no longer be allowed to sleep at home on Friday.
