The Ministry of Defense states that 10,000 Russian prisoners have committed themselves to the war
Daniela Carrilho | 2 hours ago
Moscow has ramped up its program of recruiting prisoners to fight in Ukraine since the beginning of the year, the UK Ministry of Defense (MoD) reports, noting that at least 10,000 convicts signed up to fight at the front lines in Ukraine alone every month April.
“Since the summer of 2022, detainees have been the main recruitment pool for the operations of Wagner Group private military companies in Ukraine. However, the group probably lost access to the Russian penitentiary system in February 2023 when it had rivalry communications with the Defense Ministry.
“The Russian Defense Ministry’s campaign to recruit prisoners is part of a broader and more intensive effort by the Russian military to increase its numbers while avoiding the introduction of further mandatory mobilizations that would be highly unpopular with the Russian public,” the report added.
