The elected official accused the borough’s local government and central Montreal government – both controlled by Projet Montréal – of not doing enough to clean up this disadvantaged and densely populated area.

“I have lived in Parc-Extension for 50 years and have been elected for 25 years. In five decades I’ve never seen the neighborhood so dirty. Waste damages reputation, image and quality of life,” Ms. Deros said. “The district has completely lost control. »

The city council wants city services to distribute more closed containers for garbage collection, spend more hours cleaning the borough’s streets, and hire more inspectors to deal with offenders.

Ms Deros’ press conference was organized by Ensemble Montreal – her political party – in front of a rubbish heap on private property.

Ms Deros explained that rats have not literally replaced dogs throughout the district, but that vermin have ruined the lives of many residents.

“When you see the rats running around during the day, it’s not pleasant,” she said. “I had a friend who, when she left her house, […] was bitten. She was in the hospital to get an injection. »
