Germany: Explosion caused by madman injures 12 firefighters and police officers

The motives behind the crime are not yet known, but the results are worrying. Twelve firefighters and police officers were injured in an explosion caused by a man in Germany on Thursday. Some of the injured were severe, some were even “in mortal danger,” said the region’s interior minister, Herbert Reul, on the NTV television station.

The 57-year-old lunatic was arrested at his accommodation in Ratingen, western Germany. Firefighters and police first went to the scene after being contacted about a possible fire at the shelter and the presence of someone in need of help.

When the fire brigade and police arrived, the occupant of the apartment “started an explosion” in their direction, the minister said, without giving details of the type. According to the daily newspaper Bild and the broadcaster NTV, he then set fire to petrol or another combustible substance that had been spilled in the entrance to his apartment.

The madman then closed the door and continued to set fire to the rest of the accommodation before being arrested by special police forces. The latter then found a lifeless, burned body in the apartment. “It is probably the mother” of the suspect, said the interior minister. According to Bild, the man was known on social media for his anti-vaccination attitude towards Covid-19.
