The current CEO of the social network Twitter, Elon Musk, announced this Thursday the hiring of a new CEO who will take over the helm of the company within six weeks. True to his habit of raising expectations and playing with the element of surprise that translates into traffic, he has not yet identified the executive who will succeed him at the helm of the company.

“I am pleased to announce that I have hired a new CEO [siglas en inglés de consejero delegado] for Twitter. It starts in about six weeks!” he announced on his official profile of the aforementioned social network, with the usual exclamation marks that, among other things, stand for enthusiasm in the virtual log.

Likewise, the businessman has detailed that once implementation of the new policy begins, he will become “Executive President and Director of Technology” and will be responsible for “overseeing products, software and sysops.” The tycoon had already announced in November that he would gradually reduce his presence on Twitter, although he has since given no indication of the identity or profile of his successor.

Musk, CEO of electric carmaker Tesla and aerospace company SpaceX, completed the $44 billion purchase of Twitter in late October and confirmed the firing of key company executives, including the outgoing CEO. Parag Agrawal as well as massive personnel adjustments.

Since announcing his entry into the social network, Musk has been targeted for his abrupt policy changes and neglect of his other businesses. The new CEO must grapple with advertiser churn and a shaky subscription roster, pending fickle announcements from the businessman. Musk has also reduced the company’s content moderation. The landing of the controversial Tucker Carlson on the internet, where he will have a show, fuels concerns about the role Twitter can play from an informative – or misinformative – perspective in the face of the next 2024 election. The businessman from The South African native, who describes himself as a “free speech absolutist”, reiterated that he took control of Twitter to prevent the platform from becoming a spokesman for hate and division. He also announced that he would “defeat” spam bots, a central and theoretically unresolved issue in his negotiations to acquire the company.

In an exercise in supposed participatory democracy, Musk asked his Twitter followers in December if he should step down as CEO, and 57.5% said yes. He made no move but stated his intention to resign. His abrupt entry into Twitter also caused Tesla to crash as an upside, also due to other intrinsic factors in the industry, so the announcement of the change at the top of Twitter led to a 2.4% increase in shares. Shares of the electric car manufacturer. Tesla shareholders’ concerns, fueled by Musk’s volatile behavior, appear to have calmed, at least temporarily, with the news from Twitter given the communications ship system their companies are presenting to at least public opinion.
