Backpacks banned from Michigan school

Two Michigan school districts have decided to ban backpacks on their territory after multiple gun seizures from students.

Grand Rapids Public Schools made the announcement Wednesday after confiscating a gun from a third grader’s school bag, CNN reports.

This is the fourth seizure since the beginning of the school year.

In a statement addressed to parents, the board stated:

“This is not a decision taken lightly and we understand the inconvenience this causes. We are beyond unhappy to have to make such a decision, but safety is our top priority.

According to CNN, from the beginning of the year to March 27, there were at least 16 shootings in elementary schools in the United States, in which at least one person was injured.
