Canadians and Quebecers will get more money starting July 5 thanks to the new GST refund following the passage of Law #3 to reduce the cost of living.
This one-time benefit, called One-Time Grocery Discount, will target 11 million low and modest income people and families who need it most.
The grocery rebate will be paid to eligible Canadians by direct deposit or check through the Canada Revenue Agency on July 5, the federal Treasury Department said.
For example, an eligible family with four children can receive a refund of up to $467, while a person living alone with no children is eligible for up to $234, while seniors would receive an average of $225.
In addition to that benefit, the new law provides that Ottawa will provide $2 billion for provincial health transfers, specifically to support children’s hospitals and emergency departments.
Thanks to this federal government investment, Quebec will thus receive $447 million to improve health care, much less than the province of Ontario, which will receive more than $776 million.
