Peru backs Lasso after dissolving parliament and calling elections in Ecuador

Peru on Wednesday expressed its support for Ecuador, assuring that the country’s president, conservative Guillermo Lasso, has exercised “his constitutional functions” by decreeing the dissolution of parliament and calling early general elections while impeachment proceedings against him are ongoing.

“The Peruvian government reaffirms its support for the democratic process in the sister republic of Ecuador,” Peru’s foreign ministry said in a brief statement.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs added: “It wishes that the general elections resulting from the decision taken by President Guillermo Lasso, in the exercise of his constitutional functions, will allow the Ecuadorian people to ensure the maintenance of political governance and social peace.”

In a message to the nation this morning, Lasso announced through the legal mechanism known as ‘cross death’ that Parliament would be dissolved by a Conservative majority, leaving him to rule by decree until his successor took office.
