Hungary is now blocking EU military aid to Ukraine

EU states have already supported Ukraine with 5.6 billion euros since the start of the war. That’s over now, at least for now.

Volodymyr Zelensky has been traveling a lot in recent days: after Italy, he visited Germany, Great Britain and France. The meetings were extremely friendly and he was promised uninterrupted support in the war against his Russian neighbors on all sides. The EU has already transferred €5.6 billion from the European Fund for Peace (EPF) to Ukraine. For the first time, more support now appears to be at stake.

Because now Hungary is blocking more EU military aid worth 500 million euros, European diplomats said on Wednesday. However, there still seems to be hope that a deal can be reached by the time EU foreign ministers meet next Monday. Hungary can block here because the unanimity principle applies to the release of funds.

No money left for other areas

The Budapest government, led by Viktor Orban, questions the fact that the EU is only using pot money for Ukraine. This left no financial resources to support EU interests in other trouble spots such as the Balkans, Sahel and North Africa.

The Hungarian government has not expressed any concerns about the 5.6 billion euros in military aid the EU has so far granted to Ukraine. Two billion euros are earmarked just for the procurement of one million artillery shells for war-torn Ukraine in the spring of next year.
