America’s Best Secret Beaches REVEALED: Three of the top 5 are in Hawaii, but coves in Florida, New Jersey and California also top the list
- A new list of the best secret beaches in the US has been released
- The list lists numerous locations in Hawaii, Florida, California and New Jersey
A new list has highlighted some of the best secret beaches in the United States, with Hawaii, Florida, New Jersey and California taking the top spots.
The ranking published by Family Destinations Guide found that Awahua Beach, Hawaii is located on the Molokai Kalaupapa Peninsula.
The ocean paradise is only accessible by small commuter plane operated by Mokulele Airlines, which flies daily from O’ahu and Ho’olehua, Molokai. According to the National Park Service, the walk to the beach is “extremely steep and challenging with uneven surfaces.”
Two other Hawaiian beaches – Lanikai Beach and Kauapea Beach – were close behind in third and fourth place.
Second on the list went to Shell Key Preserve in Florida, while fifth place goes to Sedge Island, New Jersey. Florida also ranked number six and number 10.
The California cities of Salt Creek Beach and Wildcat Beach occupied the final two spots in the top 10 ranking, at number eight and ninth, respectively.

The Family Destinations Guide stated in its citation that Awahua Beach took first place because of its “crystal clear turquoise waters and soft white sand”.
In addition, the top beach is surrounded by cliffs and greenery. The waters at this secluded beach are also perfect for swimming and snorkeling.
Shell Key Preserve was ranked second for its “pristine and natural” setting, with no settlements or buildings in sight.
The fifth beach — Sedge Island, New Jersey — is accessible only by boat and features wildlife, including nesting birds and crabs.
Also, unlike many other New Jersey beaches, Sedge Island doesn’t have a boardwalk or commercial settlements to attract crowds.
However, the list does not only include the well-known picturesque idea of white sand and clear water.
Bowling Ball Beach in California is known for its massive, rounded rocks that line the sand and give the shoreline a unique experience.
Lowell Point Beach – 120 miles south of Anchorage – sits on the Gulf of Alaska, is surrounded by vast forests and is within sight of snow-capped mountains.
Large pieces of driftwood grow along and out of the sand at Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island in Georgia.
Pieces of wood are also scattered on beach #10, Boneyard Beach.
